CONTRACT MANUFACTURER
CM stands for contract manufacturer. Contract manufacturer is a third party that manufacture product components or product for company. It is basically outsourcing and most of startup and small scale companies prefer it as it provide more advantages to company. CM pays big role in any product manufacturing and product designing and development. While designing any design CM tolerance is considered because later mass production is done by contract manufacturer.
What is CM tolerance ?
Every contract manufacturer has a PCB tolerance for safety purpose of components which we are going to mount on PCB and also for a person who is going to handle PCB. Here are few of CM tolerance which we consider while designing a product.
1.Component spacing :
Component spacing helps to prevent component crowding, forming of unwanted solder bridge which can be dangerous for circuit and can form short circuit. It also helps in RF circuit to prevent EMI.
2.Drill hole and via size :
Drill holes are mostly used to provide mechanical, thermal and via is used for electrical purpose. Drill hole are of two types as a plated and non plated drill hole. Non plated doesn't carry current and used for mechanical support and thermal purpose while plated drill holes are used to mount through hole component in single layer and in multilayer these holes are called via which carry current from one layer to another layer. Based on layers it connect via is classified into different types. Drill hole is calculated by a aspect ratio which is equal to board thickness/drill hole diameter but this is for through hole for via where hole is not extend through entire board aspect ratio is determined by drill depth/drill hole diameter.
3.Clearance :
Clearance is of two types hole clearance and edge clearance. Hole clearance is done to ensure solder mask clearance around plated and non plated hole. Edge clearance is done to make sure that components lies away from edge of board which reduces problems in mounting of board.
4.Trace width and angles
- Trace width should be correct according to the application for e.g. in communication lines we need same trace width and same length of trace and angles should be greater than right angle. In power lines we need high trace width which is calculated by formula Width = Area / ( Thickness * 1.378 )
